Artificial Intelligent Hybrid Systems

Software systems which employs a combination of methods and techniques from Artificial Intelligence after the development of hybrid connectionist-symbolic models. Every natural intelligent system is hybrid because it performs mental operations on both the symbolic and subsymbolic levels. For the past few years there has been an increasing discussion of the importance of such an integration that led to the development of new simple and specific AI systems (such as systems for computer vision, speech synthesis, etc., or software that employs some of the models mentioned above). Now it’s time for integration to create broad AI systems to be employed in fields as:

  • Surveillance
  • Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)
  • Real-Time pattern-based decisions

NetMedicine

The Internet has had a tremendous impact on how health care in the territory. Now we can no longer speak of telemedicine, because the term doesn't explain more what we are talking about, and we prefer the term NetMedicine, to make it clear that now the teleconsultation and diagnosis systems are integrated and visualized directly on the Internet. This area of research covers many topics relating to e-Health, such as:

  • Health Networking
  • Augmented Reality applied to surgery
  • Health Information Systems
  • Multi-Channel and Multi-Platform e-Health

Real-Time Systems

Real-Time Systems are computing systems which guarantee response within strict time constraints. They are often used in mission critical contexts, in areas such as:

  • Automotive;
  • Aeronautics and aerospace;
  • Domotics;
  • Military

Research in this field aim at studying and developing intelligent embedded systems, able to work in highly critical environments, making autonomous decisions based on logical reasoning. To allow communications between such systems, researches on real-time networks are underway. Studies on Real-Time Linux variants resulted in the development of "Lachesis", a testsuite for Linux-based Real-Time systems.

Cyber-physical systems

Today's control systems are made of an embedded system connected to the system to be controlled through a feedback loop; thus the physical process influence the computation and vice versa. The term "cyber-physical system" defines a control system developed according to a new design methodology, which models both the systems taking into account their reciprocal interactions.

AIRT Lab works on the integration of this technology in the scenarios of Ambient Assisted Living and video surveillance. The interdisciplinary nature of this research make it possible to study innovative applications, such as using a multi-agent systems to control an autonomous robots.
